Shouldn’t we focus on programs rather than buildings?
It isn’t a question of just buildings or just programs; we have to be good stewards of both. We can’t have great programs without the right facilities:
- We can’t have better science education without good labs.
- We can’t teach to the 21st century without adequate computer stations.
- We can’t recruit the best teachers unless we offer them safe, secure and modern facilities.
Duluth’s schools are majestic on the outside but need a lot of new parts on the inside. We need more money to pay teachers and fund great programs, but we can’t pay for those things at the same time we let our school foundations crumble.
We need to remake Duluth Public Schools to provide the best possible education for the 9,300 students we have, and the students who we want to attract in the future. To do that, we need to leave behind some of the schools that made Duluth great. But in their place, we are building 21st century schools that will be the envy of this region.
